# Reading Your AMH: What That Number Actually Tells You (And What It Doesn't)

There's also the practical reality: we're more likely to be juggling work without adequate leave, managing multiple family responsibilities, and facing costs that our insurance may not cover equally.
That means your AMH test becomes loaded. It's not just a hormone number; it can become the justification for rushing you into expensive interventions, or conversely, for telling you "there's nothing we can do." Some clinics have blanket cutoff scores that don't account for the fact that AMH levels vary across different racial and ethnic groups, or that your individual fertility may look nothing like the score suggests.
You need to read this yourself, not just accept it as gospel. That's an act of self-preservation and self-knowledge.
What the research says
Here's what we know: AMH correlates with ovarian reserve—the quantity of eggs available. It does not correlate strongly with egg quality, with your actual ability to conceive, or with your chances of carrying a pregnancy successfully.
A 2020 meta-analysis in Human Reproduction Update found that while AMH is useful for predicting ovarian response to stimulation during IVF (how many eggs you'll retrieve), it's a poor predictor of actual pregnancy outcomes. Women with low AMH have gotten pregnant naturally and carried babies to term. Women with high AMH have struggled with fertility. The number tells one part of a much bigger story.
There's also important nuance about what "low" and "high" actually mean. While some clinics treat AMH below 1.0 as concerning, research published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that women with AMH between 0.5 and 2.0 had similar live birth rates when conceiving naturally as women with higher AMH—if we're talking about the timeframe of a few years. Age, menstrual regularity, and male partner factor still matter significantly.
What's critical: many labs have reference ranges based primarily on white populations. Your own ethnic or racial background can influence baseline AMH levels, which means a number that looks "low" by one lab's standard might actually be normal for your body. This is data that doesn't get centered nearly enough.
What to actually do
Start by asking your doctor why they ordered this test. Was it part of a routine fertility workup? Are you evaluating your window for family planning? Are you preparing for specific interventions? The reason matters because it shapes how to interpret the number.
Get a copy of your actual result, with units and the lab's reference range clearly stated. This is your legal right. Many women get a verbal conversation ("your AMH is low") without seeing the actual numbers. You can't contextualize what you don't see.
Understand your age in relation to the number. A 28-year-old with an AMH of 1.2 is in a different position than a 42-year-old with the same result. AMH naturally declines with age—not because anything's wrong, but because you have fewer eggs to measure. Your age is your actual timeline indicator.
Request a second test if possible, ideally done at a different point in your cycle. AMH can fluctuate somewhat, and having two data points is more reliable than one. If one lab shows 0.9 and another shows 1.4, you're working with someone in that range—not necessarily in crisis.

Labs to ask for
If you're having AMH tested, ask for these additional measures to get a fuller picture:
FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) on day 3 of your cycle. This is another ovarian reserve marker. Sometimes FSH and AMH paint slightly different pictures; having both is more informative.
Estradiol on day 3 as well. Elevated baseline estradiol can artificially lower FSH and occasionally AMH readings, so you want to know.
Antral follicle count (AFC) via ultrasound. This is literally counting the small follicles visible in your ovaries. It's often more predictive of ovarian response than AMH alone and doesn't rely on hormones, so it can be steadier data.
Complete thyroid panel (TSH, free T4, thyroid antibodies). Thyroid function affects fertility and ovulation more directly than AMH does. This is the test that sometimes gets overlooked but changes everything.
Progesterone in your luteal phase (7 days before your expected period). This tells you if you're actually ovulating, which is fundamental information that no AMH number can provide.
